1961 TRIUMPH TR3A
TITLE: RESTORED 1961 TRIUMPH TR3A
VIN: TS69298LO
MILES: 80,000
OWNER MILES: 3,750
HISTORY: I purchased this TR3 in 2015. It previously had a very thorough BOF bare metal repaint by Triumph Rescue, Bally, PA in 2005. The color was changed from original red/grey to BRG/tan. The interior was redone with Connolly leather seating surfaces and Wilton wool carpeting. At the same time the 4-speed transmission w/overdrive and engine were rebuilt with 87mm pistons, a BFE #149 camshaft, an aluminum flywheel, and stainless exhaust (photo documentation and receipts included). The BMIHT certificate shows mostly numbers matching except for the color change.
I had vintage raced a TR3 for many years and had never owned a street legal TR3. It was immediately shipped to English Autosports, Stuart, FL to inspect and ensure all was in good shape. He went through all the mechanics and brought everything up to our standards. Once done it spent the rest of the winter in Florida to drive and enjoy.
This was a welcome addition to our collection of British Sports Cars, and has been fun to drive for over 10 years. Regular service has kept it running, reliable, and ready to show, as are all cars in our museum collection.
MODIFICATIONS: A thermostatically controlled auxiliary electric fan has been installed. Engine bore increased to TR4 specs and a TR4 transmission with overdrive installed. A Pertronix electronic ignition is installed along with a stainless-steel exhaust. The steering wheel is wrapped with a black leather cover.
ISSUES/PROBLEMS: None.
RUST: No rust.
SERVICE RECORDS: Receipts from current owner (2014 to 2026). Also, restoration receipts and photos (2001 – 2005)
LAST SERVICE: Replace oil pressure gauge flex hose August 2026. Oil/Filter service June 2026. Coolant refreshed March 2024.
PAINT/BODY: The British Racing Green body was repainted during the restoration, is glossy, and in good condition. A few light chips and scratches are evident, but hardly noticeable. The all-steel body is straight and true with good gaps. The soft top is tan Stayfast material and fits well. The hoodstick cover is biscuit vinyl.
INTERIOR: The biscuit leather seating surfaces with dark green piping are in great condition. The biscuit Wilton Wool carpets are very nice and have been protected with rubber floor mats. The dash is covered with biscuit vinyl along with the door cappings. The glove box is locking. All gauges and instruments are in good working order. A new wiring harness was installed during the restoration. Triumph emblem seat belts are installed.
CHASSIS/ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN: The numbers matching Triumph 4-cylinder engine was upgraded with 87mm pistons and a BFE #149 camshaft during the restoration. It starts easily, idles well, and runs strong on the road. The original 4-speed transmission with overdrive was rebuilt and works well. A Pertronix electronic ignition is installed. The chassis was refurbished with new suspension components including stainless steel brake lines. The engine compartment shows as nice as the exterior.
WHEELS/TIRES: The painted 15” X 60 spoke Dayton wire wheels were new in 2004 and are in good condition along with the Vredestein 165HR Sprint Classic tires. Tires were new in 2018 with only 2,100 miles since.
OPTIONS: Heater; Radial Tires; Tonneau Cover; Overdrive; Adjustable Steering Column; Windscreen Washers; Hoodstick Cover; 4.1 Axle Ratio.
